The Bachelor Program in Food Science and Technology (BFST) focuses on preparing undergraduate students with a deep understanding of critical concepts, basic principles and skills in the content areas of food science and technology. The scientific specification covers the understanding of the agricultural products as biological material and several aspects in processing technology to convert the agricultural commodities into food products, primarily but not exclusively in industrial scale.
The graduates of the BFST mainly work in food industries as food product specialist, food product development scientist, quality control and assurance supervisor, food production supervisor, food analyst supervisor, food safety auditor, food packaging supervisor, food ingredient specialist, nutritionist or plant operation manager. Few graduates work in non-food industries such as pharmaceutical, chemical or plantation. Graduates who work in the public sector as government officers, the majority are working at the National Agency of Drug and Food Control, whereas, the rest are working at the Food Security Council, Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Industry or the Ministry of Trade. A limited number of graduates pursue careers in academia as a lecturer, a school teacher or as a researcher who directly or indirectly continue their study after graduation. Few but an increasing number of graduates become entrepreneurs.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CURRICULUM
The development of the curriculum refers to the Indonesian Qualifications Framework (IQF) and the National Higher Education Standard (NHES). The specific guideline for food technology refers to The Indonesian Association of Food Technologist (PATPI) and The Institute of Food Technologist (IFT) (IFT Program Approval). The BFST of Universitas Brawijaya is among 80 food science and technology undergraduate programs in the world approved by the IFT (IFT approved undergraduate programs).
