Curriculum Structure

The curriculum of the Biotechnology Study Programme is structured into five main modules. Here we define modules as groups of courses that contribute to the attainment of specific learning outcomes. The five main modules are:

  1. Basic (37.5 ECTS): compulsory courses for laying the foundational knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences.
  2. Core (93 ECTS): compulsory courses for building the theoretical and applied concepts of industrial biotechnology.
  3. Personality (18 ECTS): compulsory courses for instilling nationalism and developing personality.
  4. Final Project (19.5 ECTS): compulsory projects for developing research, entrepreneurial, social and interpersonal skills.
  5. Elective (48 ECTS): optional courses or projects for enriching knowledge and skills in diverse fields; may be taken in other institutions.

The five main modules above constitute approximately 177 ECTS of lectures and 39 ECTS of practical work (depending on the ECTS of the electives taken). The ratio between theory and practice is approximately 4.5:1.

Modules

A general description and content of the five main modules are given as follows.

Basic Module (37.5 ECTS)
Description The Basic Module is designed to equip students with the knowledge of and skills in mathematics and the natural sciences and prepare them for other courses in the program. This module is divided into two sub modules: Basic Science and Basic Biotechnology.

Core Module I: Biomass and Biological Systems (36 ECTS)
Description Core Module I is designed to equip students with the knowledge of and skills in the biology, chemistry, and physics of biomass. Here, biomass is broadly defined as any organic matter from any taxa (virus, archaea, bacteria, protists, fungi, animals, or plants) and not confined to those originating from living plants as would generally be defined in the field of renewable energy. In this sense, biomass and biological systems can serve as resources (materials) and agents for making bioproducts through bioconversion processes. This module is divided into four sub modules: Biomaterials; Biomolecules and Cells; Bioanalyses; and Bioengineering.
Sub Module 1: Biomaterials
Course Biomaterials (and Practical)
Content In Biomaterials (and Practical), students learn about the biological, physical, and chemical properties of biomaterials and their applications in various fields.
Sub Module 2: Biomolecules and Cells
Courses Biochemistry; Enzymology; Genetics; Molecular and Cell Biology
Content In Biochemistry, students learn about the chemistry of biomolecules from carbohydrates to nucleic acids. In Enzymology, students learn about the principles of how enzymes work. In Genetics, students learn about the principles of inheritance. In Molecular and Cell Biology, students learn about the molecular mechanisms underlying how cells work.
Sub Module 3: Bioanalyses
Courses Biochemistry and Enzymology Practical; Analytical Techniques in Biotechnology (and Practical)
Content In Biochemistry and Enzymology Practical, students learn about the principles of general biomolecule analyses. In Analytical Techniques in Biotechnology (and Practical), students learn about the principles and practical aspects of basic and advanced techniques used in biotechnology.
Sub Module 4: Bioengineering
Courses Introduction to Bioinformatics; Genetic Engineering (and Practical)
Content In Introduction to Bioinformatics, students learn about biological data (in databases) and their analyses. In Genetic Engineering (and Practical), students learn about the principles and practical aspects of microbial engineering and how to design constructs for specific purposes.
Core Module II: Bioprocess (28.5 ECTS)
Description Core Module II is designed to equip students with the knowledge of and skills in the engineering principles of bioconversion processes. This module is divided into two sub modules: Bioprocess Engineering and Bioprocess Technology.
Sub Module 1: Bioprocess Engineering

Contribution Scoring Matrix

The contribution level of courses towards the attainment of specific ILOs and ILOs towards the attainment of specific PLOs is measured with a score of 0–1. Note that (i) the contribution score is calculated in proportion to the ECTS of courses that support the attainment of specific ILOs or PLOs, (ii) the sum of the contribution score of all courses towards a specific ILO or PLO is 1, (iii) minor contribution is not accounted for, and (iv) the scores are approximation only and used for assessment purposes.

ILO-PLO Scored Matrix

The ILO-PLO scored matrix defines the contribution level of specific ILOs towards the attainment of specific PLOs. The ILO-PLO scored matrix is given as follows.

ILO PLO
PLO1 PLO2 PLO3
ILO1 0.04
ILO2 0.06
ILO3 0.04
ILO4 0.18
